Myth Busting Corner: Disability Support Edition
What You Really Need to Know
For February, we’re tackling some of the most common misconceptions about support work. Every day, support workers navigate complex situations, make critical decisions, and provide care with skill and empathy.
Yet myths about the role persist. This month, we’re busting the top three myths we hear most often: that support work is easy, that participants can’t make their own decisions, and that paperwork isn’t part of care.
Myth #1: “Support work is easy! Anyone can do it.”
Reality:
Support work is a skilled profession. It takes empathy, patience, quick thinking, and adaptability. Every day brings new challenges, from communication differences to unexpected behaviours and you navigate them with expertise.
Myth #2: “People with disabilities can’t make their own decisions.”
Reality:
Choice and autonomy are central to dignity. Even when people need support, they can and do make decisions every day. Your role is to enable, not replace, their choices.
Try This: Offer options and guide rather than direct even simple choice counts.
Myth #3: “Paperwork isn’t part of care.”
Reality:
Documentation means protection. Clear notes ensure safety, continuity of care, and advocacy for participants. Your writing can prevent mistakes, improve outcomes, and preserve dignity.
